Burning Permits

Each year, Oxford Fire spends a considerable amount of time assisting the Department of Natural Resources in fighting wildland fires.  While burning permits are required for a great portion of the burning season, people often neglect to obtain them, or do not follow the instructions for safe burning.  Fires often escape from burning barrels, brush piles, leaf piles and campfires, and have burned many acres through the years, occasionally destroying buildings also.  To avoid these problems, and sizeable citations from the DNR, you are encouraged to obtain a burning permit, and READ the information provided before burning.

This year the DNR has begun using a new system for burning permits.  You still obtain your initial permit from an area fire warden, but the guidelines for burning have changed somewhat.  To avoid any confusion or misinterpretation, we encourage you to contact the Wisconsin DNR at: 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876) or on the internet at:  dnr.wi.gov/forestry/fire.

After you have obtained your written annual burning permit, you must check the internet or call the hotline for DAILY burning restrictions after  11:00 a.m. on the day you wish to burn.

Your cooperation can save property, and potentially, lives.
